What was the point that maslow was making with his human hierarchy emotional pyramid?

I loved Maslow so I agreed with everything he said. That's not good. The hierarchy meant to me that, if left untreated, you can advance in your illness, although that was not the textbook ysis. Maslow was trying to simplify the degrees of emotional illness/wellness.
