My left eye is stingy and watery?

It was yesturday too. For about an hour I thought I had an eyelash in my eye. When I finally looked in the mirror I couldn't find an eyelash but my eye was pretty red. I splashed water on it and tried to forget it. Finally it went away last night and I went to sleep. Tonight it started stinging again.
